A method of reducing the death of CNS neurons in a patient infected with the human immunodeficiency virus comprises administering to the patient a compound capable of reducing the gp120-sensitive increase in the concentration of free Ca ++ ions in the CNS neurons of the patient , this compound being administered in a concentration effective to cause such reduction. |
