abstract The invention relates to a process for the preparation of guanine derivatives substituted in position 9, according to the general formula (I), in which R represents C1-C4 alkyl optionally replaced by one or more hydroxy groups, in which R represents (alpha), benzyl , ribosyl, 2'-deoxyribosyl or (CH2) n-OR1 where n represents 1 or 2, and R1 represents CH2CH2OH or (beta), or their salts, in which a 5- (thiocarbamoyl) amino-1H-imidazole-4- carboxamide substituted in position 1, of general formula (III), in which R is defined as in formula (I), is cyclized: a) by treatment using a heavy metal salt from the group consisting of salts of Cu, Ag, Pb and Hg in an aqueous alkaline medium containing at least four equivalents of OH- ions, at a temperature between approximately 0 ° C and the reflux temperature or b) by treatment with a compound peroxy in an aqueous alkaline medium at a temperature between about 0 and 30 ° C, after which (I) is isolated by treatment with acid, e t if desired, is transformed into a salt. The invention further comprises intermediates used in the preparation of the above-mentioned compounds.
