abstract The invention provides UV-absorbing compounds of formula (I), processes for preparing compounds of formula (I) and compositions, including sunscreens, containing compounds of formula (I), wherein A and B are alkyl, haloalkyl or together form a carbocyclic ring; R1 is alkyl, haloalkyl, substituted alkyl where the substituent is selected from hydroxy, amino, alkoxy, alkanoyl, alkoxycarbonyl, phenyl and the radical of formula (I(a)), wherein A, B, R?2 and R3¿ are as herein defined; alkenyl, cycloalkyl; phenyl; the groups phenyl and benzyl; said groups being substituted in the benzene ring by alkyl, alkenyl and alkoxy; and wherein R?1 and R2¿ may form a carbocyclic ring; R2 is hydrogen or alkyl; R3 is alkyl, substituted alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl and substituted benzyl; and the invention also provides for compounds of formula (VII); wherein A and B are methyl; R2 is hydrogen; and R3 is alkyl.
