abstract | Image processing method and device (10) for determining a proliferation index in a cell sample by staining the cells with a chromogen for a proliferation substance and with a counter stain for the cell nuclei. The chromogen is activated by an antibody-enzyme conjugate that binds to the proliferation substance to produce a stained cell sample. This colored cell sample is examined using an optical microscope (12), which represents part of the device, and which produces an enlarged image of the cell sample. The device optically filters (18) the image of the cell sample and produces two optically enhanced images, one of the proliferation substance and one of the cell nuclei. These enhanced images are electronically analyzed to determine the quantities of cell nuclei and proliferation substance that appear there. These quantities are then compared to obtain a proliferation index for the portion of cell sample that appears on the image of the cell sample. |
