Methods and compositions for a lipid excipient in liquid or gel form for use in pharmaceutical or cosmetic preparations. Said lipid excipient comprises a phospholipid, such as a lysophospholipid, for example, mono-oleoyl-phosphatidylethanolamine ("MOPE"). Relatively low concentrations of said lipid can be used to form the gel, for example, between about 1% and 2%. The invention also describes the use of a lipid delivery system, at a relatively low lipid concentration, such as a non-toxic and non-irritant carrier or excipient, to be used alone or in combination with other agents, by cosmetics or medicines. Thus, the lipid excipient in the form of a spray or drops can be used specifically for the non-irritant application of peptides (for example calcitonin or insulin) to the nasal mucosa, due to the capacity of the excipient increase absorption through the nasal membranes. In cosmetic products, it can be used alone or in combination with biologically active agents. |
