titleOfInvention | PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF FATTY ALCOHOLS. |
abstract | In the process described, which is used for the production of fatty alcohols, a fatty acid or a mixture of fatty acids is esterified in a column reactor containing several esterification plates, each of which has a predetermined liquid retention and contains a charge of a solid esterification catalyst placed on it, for example an ion exchange resin containing -SO3H and / or -COOH groups. A liquid phase containing the fatty acid or the mixture of fatty acids descends flowing in the column reactor from an esterification plate to the next lower plate, against the current of a lower alkanol vapor stream amount, such as methanol vapor. Relatively dry lower alkanol vapor (the water content of which does not exceed 5% by molar mass) is injected into the bottom of the column reactor. The esterification water is removed from the top of the column reactor in the vapor stream, while the ester product is recovered from the reactor sump. As the liquid descends the trays, it meets always drier lower alkanol. The ester product recovered from the bottom of the reactor has an ester content of at least 99% by molar mass (calculated on a free base of lower alkanol). This ester product is then subjected to hydrogenation in the vapor phase by using a copper oxide - reduced zinc oxide catalyst. The resulting mixture contains, in addition to at least 0.5% to about 5% by molar mass of unreacted ester, the alcohol or fatty alcohols and lower alkanol produced, the separation of the lower acanol of the ester not being necessary when the lower alkanol is methanol. This is distilled to produce a fatty alcohol fraction which contains a lesser amount of a lower alkyl fatty acid ester or ester (e.g. methyl). The fatty alcohol fraction is subjected to transesterification to convert substantially all of the lower alkyl ester |
