abstract | A polymerization vessel (1) which is provided with a bubble sensor (10) for detecting bubbles on the liquid surface when they exceed a predetermined amount, and a process for polymerizing a monomer having an ethylenic double bond in an aqueous medium within a polymerization vessel is given. The invention is characterized in that a bubble sensor (10) detects bubbles on the liquid surface when they exceed a predetermined amount, and that measures to suppress bubble formation are taken when said bubble sensor detects bubbles exceeding the predetermined amount. The present invention process suppresses formation of polymer scales due to foaming while maintaining the rate of heat recovery by the reflux condenser and the recovery rate of unreacted monomer as high as possible, achieving reduction of time in the polymerization cycle and improved quality of polymers. |
