abstract Process for the preparation of N-succinimidyl carbonates of the formula <IMAGE> in which Ar denotes a 9-fluorenyl radical, a phenyl radical, which is unsubstituted or substituted by halogen, nitro, alkyl having 1 - 4 C atoms or trifluoromethyl, or denotes a 5- or 6-membered heteroaromatic radical having one or two N or S atoms, by reacting an alcohol of the formula Ar - CH2OH II in which Ar has the abovementioned meaning, with phosgene in the presence of an inert water-miscible diluent to give a chloroformic ester of the formula <IMAGE> and reacting the reaction mixture without isolating the compound of the formula III with an aqueous solution of N-hydroxysuccinimide in the presence of an alkali metal bicarbonate or carbonate, alkaline earth metal bicarbonate or carbonate or ammonium bicarbonate or carbonate as neutralising agent, and isolating the compound of the formula I from the organic phase.
