abstract The present invention relates to a carbohydrate receptor for mycoplasma pneumoniae and mycoplasma hominus and to its use for detecting the presence of mycoplasmas in biological fluids and in diseased tissues and cells. The receptor can be contained in a composition comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient. Methods are provided for purifying, detecting or extracting mycoplasmas contained in diseased tissue or fluids. The receptor contains sulfatures, dextran sulfate, sialyloligo-saccharides and mixtures of these compounds.
