abstract | A certain quantity of titanium (5) is heated in a crucible (1) to produce a molten bath (5), and a layer of slag (7) containing an ionizable titanium compound, such as than titanium dioxide, in combination with other ionizable slag components. The slag (7) is then heated to bring it to the state of fusion by means of a direct current plasma arc, the molten bath (5) being anodic. When the slag (7) is in the molten state, the polarity of the plasma arc is reversed so that the molten bath (5) is cathodic, the slag (7) then behaving like a layer of transfer of electrons, so as to reduce the titanium oxide in the slag (7) to titanium and to convert the oxygen dissolved in the molten bath (5) to an ionic species of oxygen at the interface between the slag (7) and the molten pool (5). The resulting liquid titanium is combined with the molten bath (5), while the ionic species of oxygen is transported upward through the slag (7) and released from the slag layer (7) by a process of 'oxidation. Additional amounts of titanium dioxide can be added to the slag (7) in order to continuously convert the titanium dioxide to titanium by the reverse polarity plasma arc heating process. |
