titleOfInvention | Process for the preparation of bisphenols |
abstract | Triaromatic bisphenols are prepared by reacting a phenolic compound with at least one halo-compound selected from aromatic compounds having an (α,α-dihalo)alkyl or (α-halo)alk-1-enyl substituent with at least one β-hydrogen atom in said alkyl or alkenyl moiety, a trihalomethyl substituent or a dihalocyanomethyl substituent. Preferably, said halo-compound is 1,1-dichloroethylbenzene, 1-chlorostyrene, or mixtures thereof. The reaction may be conducted in the presence or absence of a solvent; an excess of the phenolic compound can serve as the solvent. The product is conveniently recovered by removing the by-product HCl, excess phenolic compound, excess solvent and cooling. Yields of greater than 90 percent of theoretical and a large proportion of para isomer can be obtained. Tris-(1,1,1-(4-hydroxyaromatic) toluenes are believed to be novel compounds. |
