A mesomorphic compound represented by the following formula (I):n wherein R 1 and R 2 respectively denote an alkyl group having 2 - 16 carbon atoms capable of having a substituent; X 1 and X 3 respectively denote a single bond, -0-,n X 2 denotes a single bond,n A 1 and A 2 respectively denote a single bond,n n A3 denotesn n X 4a , X 5a , X 4b , X 5b , X 4c and X 5c respectively denote hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, -CH 3 , -CN or -CF 3 ; and n is 0 or 1, with proviso that: X 1 always denotes a single bond when A 1 denotes a single bond, X 3 always denotes a single bond when A 2 denotes a single bond and n is 0; A 1 and A 2 cannot be single bonds simultaneously; X 3 cannot be -0- when X 1 denotes a single bond or -0-, A 1 denotes a single bond orn denotesn and X 1 cannot be a single bond when A 1 denotesn and A 2 denotes a single bond and n is 0. |
