titleOfInvention | METHOD FOR PRODUCING A-SULFO-2-CHLORBENZOIC ACID. |
abstract | Multi-step process consisting in converting a 2-chloro-4-sulphotoluene (SCT) into 2-chloro-4-sulphobenzoic acid (SCUBA). The first step (a) comprises an S1 bromination process for the selective side chain of SCT into 2-chloro-4-sulphodibromotoluene (SCDBT) or 2-chloro-4-sulpho-bromotoluene (SCMBT) starting with bromine in chloroform or trichloroethane and by irradiation of the mixture with light which dissociates the bromine. Next comes the second step (b) which includes the S2 process, where the product of S1 is hydrolyzed at an elevated temperature after the separation of the organic solvent until the corresponding alcohol (SCOL) or aldehyde is obtained ( SCAB). In the last step (c), the product of S2 is oxidized to obtain the SCUBA, either by oxidation with a peroxyacid, which has optionally been produced in situ, provided that the S3 process has been removed beforehand. bromide / bromine from the aqueous solution, either by oxidation with bromine, produced in situ preferably in process S5 by oxidation of residual bromide with hydrogen peroxide, operation which will then be followed by process S3 to remove bromine / bromide . The orderly combination of S1, S2, S5 and S3 provides a closed loop process cycle that recycles the environmentally hazardous bromine reagent. |
