abstract The invention relates to new 3-methylsulfonylmethyl-4-sulfomethyl-pyrrolidinium-betaine (methylsulfone-sulfobetaines) of the general formula I, which can be used as intermediates for further syntheses or, if they contain a long-chain alkyl radical, as polyfunctional surfactants or hydrotope. Molar amounts of diallylammonium salt are reacted with chloroacetic acid and the double-molar amount of sodium bisulfite in the presence of a catalytic amount of a peroxodisulfate, and the reaction solution obtained, after addition of a catalytic amount of iodide and calcium carbonate, is converted to 3-methylsulfonylmethyl-4-sulfomethyl-pyrrolidinium-betainen I by heating development of carbon dioxide has ended.
