titleOfInvention Silver catalyst for the oxidation of ethylene and process for its preparation
abstract 2.1 In the silver catalysts used to date, the silver is approximately evenly distributed in the volume of the highly porous, heat-resistant catalyst carrier. The silver particles located in the deeper layers of the catalyst generally make only a small contribution to the partial oxidation of ethylene to ethylene oxide, the heat released within the carrier particles is dissipated more slowly than the heat which is generated on the surface of the carrier particles and the proportion of the isomerized or further oxidized ethylene oxide is noticeably large.n n n 2.2 In the catalyst according to the invention, the silver is distributed unevenly within a carrier particle; on the outer surface and in the layer close to the surface, which is less than 0.5 mm thick, the silver concentration is significantly higher than in the interior of the particle. This increases the activity, selectivity and life of the catalyst.n n n 2.3 The catalyst according to the invention is used for the partial oxidation of ethylene to ethylene oxide by means of oxygen in the gas phase.
