abstract The invention provides a method for generating chlorine dioxide which involves contacting a stable precursor with a transition metal in a buffered aqueous medium. The chlorine thus generated can be used to disinfect solutions and devices, for example contact lens solutions and contact lenses. Also provided are compositions containing the transition metal and the stable precursor.
