abstract | The invention relates to a method and apparatus for determining whether a pregnant woman is at significant risk of carrying a fetus with Down syndrome. The method involves measuring in pregnant women the blood levels of the free beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin. The level of free beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin can be compared individually or with other markers to reference data. The invention also relates to a computerized apparatus for determining preference using a probability density function produced from a set of reference data by a linear discrimination analysis technique. |
