abstract The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of 2- or 4-amino-thiophenols of the general formula I. wherein R, X¹ and X² are as defined in the description, by reaction of 2- or 4-halonitrobenzenes of the general formula II, wherein R, Hal, X³ and X⁴ are defined as indicated in the description, with alkali metal sulfides, alkali hydrogen sulfides or alkali polysulfides in an aqueous alkaline medium, extraction of the reaction products at pH values from 4 to 8 with a water-poorly soluble solvent, after removal of the aqueous Phase aftertreatment with aqueous alkali metal hydroxides and isolation of the compounds of the general formula I.
