titleOfInvention Buffered metronidazole compositions for intravaginal treatment of vaginal infections
abstract A composition and method for treatment of bacterial vaginosis and/or trichomoniasis are disclosed. An afflicted vagina is treated with a therapeutically effective amount of a buffered metronidazole composition having a pH in the range of about 3 to about 4.25, preferably about 3.75 to about 4.25. A preferred such composition comprises metronidazole, a gelled hydrophobic and water-dispersible polymer, such as a polyacrylic acid polymer having a molecular weight in the range of about 1,250,000 to about 4,000,000 daltons, and an aqueous solvent for the metronidazole.
