abstract | Branched polycarbonates are prepared by melt nequilibration of aromatic cyclic polycarbonate oligomers with na polyhydric phenol having more than two hydroxy groups per nmolecule, preferably 1,1,1-tris-(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethane, in nthe presence of a carbonate equilibration catalyst, npreferably tetrabutylammonium tetraphenylborate. In an nadditional embodiment of the invention, a linear aromatic npolycarbonate is added to the reaction mixture. Branched npolycarbonates prepared according to this invention have high nmelt strength and high shear sensitivity characteristics and nare useful in extrusion and injection molding processing napplications and particularly useful in blow molding napplications for preparing relatively large articles and npanels. |
