titleOfInvention Phaco-emulsification apparatus and method
abstract An apparatus for phaco-emulsification and extraction of cataract tissue from the lens (L) comprises a hollow probe (18) provided at its proximal end with a connection to a laser source (16), the radiation of which passes through lenses focusing (22) and collimating (24) and pass non-axially through the probe (18). Inlets and outlets disposed at the proximal end of the probe (18) are connected to injection (30) and extraction (50) pumping systems with separate dosing. The laser radiation is applied to the tissue through a bubble or sphere (S) of saline solution formed at the distal end of the probe (18). One method, in which a metered amount of saline solution is caused to form a small sphere (S) within the tissue, is to apply ablative laser energy to adjacent tissue through the sphere (S) to produce the phaco -emulsification, the emulsified tissue and the solution being then extracted.
