abstract A terminal effector (12) is described for effectively removing gaseous by-products of laser surgery from the surgical site. The end of the effector has a flexible tube (16) and a collapsible suction head (18) fixed in an adhesive and hermetic manner around a surgical site. The suction head (18) includes a generally annular plenum (28) for removing smoke plumes from the surgical site by suction around a 360 ° arc. A porous plenum support (48) prevents the flexible plenum (28) from flattening in the presence of the vacuum that it diffuses around the integral periphery of the plenum.
