abstract A composition useful for molding articles such as food containers, beverage bottles, hardened structural plastics and the like comprises linear or unsaturated polyester or polycarbonate suitable for molding reacted with the residue of one or more compounds of Benzodioxylmethine having the formula (I) or containing a copolymer of this residue. In the formula, R1 is cyano, carboxyl, alkenyloxycarbonyl or a substituted or unsubstituted alkoxycarbonyl, cycloalkoxycarbonyl or aryloxycarbonyl radical, R2 is one of the groups described in the case of R1 or an aryl, carbamoyl, alkanoyl, cycloalkanoyl, aroyl, alkylsulfonyl, cycloalkylsulfonyl radical , arylsulfonyl or substituted or unsubstituted heterocyclic aryl; R3 is hydrogen or a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl radical; R4 is hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxyl or halogen; n is 1 or 2; and X is a substituted or unsubstituted methylene or ethylene radical; provided that the benzodioxolylmethine compound carries at least one substituent capable of reacting with one or more monomers from which the condensation polymer is derived. The benzodioxylmethine residue absorbs radiation between 250 nm and 390 nm, cannot be extracted from said polymer and remains stable under polymer processing conditions. The benzodioxylmethine residues present in the polymer form an integral part of the polymer chain and absorb ultraviolet radiation in a range between approximately 250 and 390 nm. These residues cannot be extracted from the polymer and remain stable under the conditions of preparation and treatment of the polymers.
