abstract Novel imidazole derivatives of the formulan wherein R 1 , R 2 , R' 1 and R' 2 , which can be the same or different, are H, CH 3 , C 2 H 5 , C 3 H 7 , OCH 3 , OH, CH 2 0H, N0 2 , NH 2 , CN, CF 3 , CHF 2 , CH 2 F or halogen; R is H orn where R 3 is H, CH 3 or halogen; R 4 is H, R 5 is H or OH, R 6 is H or OH and R 7 is H or R 4 and R 6 together form a bond or R 5 and R 7 together form a bond; X and Y, which can be the same or different, are a bond, a straight C 1 - 2 -alkyl or the corresponding alkenyl and z is 0 to 2 andn wherein Ri, R 2 , R' 1 , R' 2 and R' are as defined before, R 4 is H or OH and R 5 is H or R 4 and Rs together form a bond and y is 0 to 4, and their non-toxic salts exhibit aromatase and desmolase inhibiting properties. Very selective aromatase inhibiting compounds are valuable in the treatment of estrogen dependent diseases, e.g. breast cancer.
