titleOfInvention | Method and apparatus for measuring incident light angle relative to a reference |
abstract | Apparatus (100) operable in accordance with the nmethod of the present invention for measuring the angle of nincidence of a light beam or plane (108) relative to level ncomprises a photodetector array (102) for sensing the nlight and a level mirror (104) preferably comprising a npool of mercury. Optics (112, 114, 118, 120) are provided nfor transmitting the light to the photodetector array in nalignment with the angle of incidence of the light n(aligned light) and also after the light has been nreflected from the mercury pool (reflected light). A nshutter (106) is provided for separating aligned light nfrom reflected light such that distinct signals nrepresentative of the two are generated by the nphotodetector array. The distinct signals are processed nby up-counting and down-counting a counter circuit to ndetermine the average centers of light spots nrepresentative of the aligned light and the reflected nlight and the distance between those average centers which nis representative of the deviation of the light beam or nplane (108) from level. |
