titleOfInvention Method for the production of long chain hydrocarbyl substituted mono-or dicarboxylic acid materials
abstract The present invention provides a process for the npreparation of long chain hydrocarbyl substituted mono- or ndicarboxylic acid materials in high active ingredient nconcentrations which comprises reacting a long chain nhydrocarbon polymer, generally a polyolefin, and an nmonounsaturated carboxylic reactant such as maleic nanhydride in the presence of chlorine, wherein at least nabout 60 mol% of the chlorine is added to the reaction nmixture containing said polyolefin and monounsaturated ncarboxylic reactant at a reaction temperature not greater nthan about 170°C while imparting to the reaction mixture a ntotal mixing energy of at least about 4 HP/1000 gal. This nprocess selectivity produces more monofunctionalized long nchain hydrocarbyl substituted mono- or dicarboxylic acid nmaterial product and substantially reduces the amount of noxidized by-product material, giving less sediment to be nremoved from the product.
