titleOfInvention | Apparatus and method for the electrolytic production of metals |
abstract | Improved electrolytic cells and methods allow the production of metals by electrolytic reduction of a compound dissolved in an electrolyte (45) in the molten state. A protective surface layer (41) is formed on at least one electrode (42) in the reduction cell by electrolysis and optionally on the coating (52) of the cell. This protective surface layer is composed of a material which, under the operating conditions of the cell: a) is not substantially reduced by the metallic product; b) does not react appreciably with the electrolyte contained in the cell and consequently does not form any material capable of reacting with the metallic product; and c) has a more electronegative electrochemical potential than the electrochemical potential of the compound which is subjected to electrolysis in order to obtain the metallic product (46) in the cell. The protective surface layer can be formed on a metal layer which serves as an electrode and which is composed of a material whose oxide also meets the criteria for selecting the protective layer. The material of which the protective layer is made can also be applied to the surface of the cell coating. |
