abstract The liquid crystal display device described, which contains a liquid crystalline medium comprising a host material and at least one fluorescent dye, is characterized in that the host material consists of at least two liquid crystalline compounds, one of which has one negative or positive dielectric anisotropy and the other a neutral dielectric anisotropy, in that the host mixture has an extinction coefficient of less than 2 × 102 between 300 and 400 nm and in that the liquid crystalline medium also comprises an amount effective of an energy transfer agent having an extinction coefficient of at least 104 between 300 and 400 nm, a solubility in the liquid crystal medium of at least 0.1% and a quantum fluorescence yield of at least 0.2.
