titleOfInvention Method for the reductive methylation of primary amines
abstract Permethylated amines particularly pentamethyldinethylenetriamine, are prepared by a two stage reductive nmethylation of amines containing at least one primary namine group. In the first stage, only a sufficient namount of formaldehyde to monomethylate the primary namine groups present is continuously fed to the reaction nsystem at a high flow rate, and thereafter the flow rate nof the formaldehyde is substantially reduced for the nsecond stage in which methylation is completed The nproduction of by-products is substantially reduced and npreparation times are significantly shorter in ncomparison to processes where the formaldehyde flow rate nremains constantly high for the entirety of the nreaction.
