abstract An efficient and economical method is proposed for the prepa­ration of a silica sol dispersion in an organic solvent from an aque­ous silica sol. When the desired organic solvent is hydrophilic hav­ing miscibility with water, the starting aqueous silica sol disper­sion is centrifuged to settle the silica particles followed by dis­carding the supernatant and the deposited silica particles are re-­dispersed in the organic solvent. This procedure of solvent replace­ment is repeated several times, if necessary, to reduce the content of water in the dispersion medium. When the desired organic sol­vent is hydrophobic having no miscibility with water, the above obtained silica sol dispersion in a hydrophilic organic solvent is treated with an oleophilic treatment agent to render the surface of the silica particles hydrophobic and then the silica sol dispersion is centrifuged followed by discarding of the supernatant and re-dis­persion of the deposited silica particles in the hydrophobic organic solvent.
