titleOfInvention | A method for the preparation of a silica sol dispersed in an organic solvent |
abstract | An efficient and economical method is proposed for the preparation of a silica sol dispersion in an organic solvent from an aqueous silica sol. When the desired organic solvent is hydrophilic having miscibility with water, the starting aqueous silica sol dispersion is centrifuged to settle the silica particles followed by discarding the supernatant and the deposited silica particles are re-dispersed in the organic solvent. This procedure of solvent replacement is repeated several times, if necessary, to reduce the content of water in the dispersion medium. When the desired organic solvent is hydrophobic having no miscibility with water, the above obtained silica sol dispersion in a hydrophilic organic solvent is treated with an oleophilic treatment agent to render the surface of the silica particles hydrophobic and then the silica sol dispersion is centrifuged followed by discarding of the supernatant and re-dispersion of the deposited silica particles in the hydrophobic organic solvent. |
