abstract The present invention relates to biocatalysts which are in the form of beads and have high mechanical strength, comprising enzymatically active material, a cationic polyelectrolyte, preferably chitosan, multiply charged anions and silica, and to process for their preparation. This application likewise relates to processes for reacting organic substances, e.g. for preparing alpha -hydroxy carboxylic acids from alpha -keto carboxylic acids, especially 2-(R)-hydroxy- 4-phenylbutyric acid from 2-oxo-4-phenylbutyric acid, using the biocatalysts according to the invention.
