abstract A process for preparing a polymerizable compoundn in which:n R, is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group; A is a group of the formula:-n [in which X is a C 2 -C 4 alkylene group or a group of the formula:n n (in which the groups R 4 are the same or are different and each is a C 1 -C 4 alkyl group and Rs is a groupn in which R 7 is a C 2 -C 4 alkylene group, Rs is a C 2 -C 7 alkylene group and m is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4); R 2 is a hydrogen atom or a C 1 -C 10 alkyl group; and R 3 is a qroup:n (in which R 7 , R s and m have the meanings defined above and R 6 is a C 1 -C 4 alkylene group)]; Y is a group of the formula: -CH 2 -CH 2 -0-,n n (in which Z is a C 2 -C 7 alkylene group); p is an integer of from 1 to 100; and q is an integer of from 1 to 5; nwhich process comprises the steps of ring-opening addition polymerizing 1 to 100 moles of β-methyl-δ-valerolactone with one mole of a compound, having both a polymerizable double bond and a hydroxyl group, of the formula:n (in which R 1 and A have the meanings defined above) in the presence of a ring-opening addition polymerization catalyst; and then effecting a ring-opening addition of 1 to 5 moles of alkyleneoxide or a cyclic ester to the thus obtained compound.n The invention also provides a similar process (omitting the second ring opening step) for the preparation of compounds wherein q is 0. In addition the invention provides certain specific classes of compounds of formula (2) and, further, coating composition containing acrylic resins derived from the polymerizable compounds obtained in accordance with the invention.
