The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of diols of the general formulae In and/or its monoesters of the general formulae IIn and/or the general formulae IIIn wherein R₁ and R₂ are the same or different and each denotes a lower alkyl having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, preferably a methyl, whereby aldehydes containing a hydrogen atom in alfa position are condensed in a multi phase reaction environment and having the general formulae IV n where in R₁ and R₂ have the meanings given above, in the presence of a catalytic system consisting of a phase transfer catalyst and an alkaline substance. |
