abstract 5-substituted ortho-aminophenols of formula: in which : R₁ represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a hydroxyalkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms; R₂ represents, independently of R₁, an alkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, an alkoxy radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a benzyl radical; addition salts with an acid and phenates, and dye composition containing a compound of formula (I) or a salt or phenate of such a compound.n n n 5-substituted ortho-aminophenols can dye hair in a rich range of shades with good strength.
