abstract Supertwist liquid crystal displays having a characteristic curve with a particularly advantageous slope are obtained when the nematic liquid crystal mixture obeys the following conditions: a nematic phase range of at least 60°C, a viscosity less than or equal to 30 mPa.s, DELTAepsilon/epsilonorthogonale < 1.5, where DELTAepsilon is the dielectric anisotropy and epsilonorthogonale the dielectric constant in the direction of the shorter axis of the liquid crystal molecule, and DELTAepsilon is greater than or equal to +5, and contains the following components: a) markedly dielectrically positive compounds with high epsilonorthogonale, b) relatively nonpolar compounds with high epsilonorthogonale and, if necessary, compounds with high birefringence.
