A photoactivated bifunctional chelating agent is used to couple chelatable ions to biomolecules, especially proteins. The photoactivatable group is preferably (1) an aryl diazirine or fluorinated diazo compound, (2) an arylnitrene, or (3) an alpha,beta-unsaturated ketone, which, when exposed to light, yield highly reactive carbenes, nitrenes, or free radicals, respectively. |
