| abstract | The application describs a process for the preparation nof a membrane comprising bisphenol-based polycarbonate nwherein at least 25 percent by weight of the bisphenol nmoieties are tetrahalogenated wherein the halogen is Cl nor Br, and the membrane prepared by such process. The nprocess generally requires (1) mixing (i) a bisphenol-nbased polycarbonate wherein at least 25 percent by nweight of the bisphenol moieties are tetrahalogenated, nwherein the halogen is Cl or Br, and (ii) a solvent for nsuch polycarbonate, wherein the mixture has a sufficient nviscosity to allow extrusion at temperatures at which nthe mixture is homogeneous; (2) heating the mixture to nform a homogeneous fluid that is extrudable; (3) nextruding the heated mixture into a shape suitable for nmembrane use; (4) passing the formed membrane through a nquench zone wherein the mixture undergoes phase nseparation, and the major portion of the solvent is nremoved from the formed membrane, wherein the membrane nformed is a membrane with a discriminating region ncapable of separating oxygen from nitrogen. Such nmembranes have excellent mechanical and thermal nproperties. |
