abstract Certain reducible compounds are useful in nanalytical compositions, elements and methods, for nexample for the detection of bacterial cells. These ncompounds comprise a moiety which provides an aniline ndye upon reduction. Structurally, the reducible ncompounds are quinones having suitable substituents nwhich promote varying amounts of aniline dye release nat physiological pH.
