abstract | A process for effectively preparing crystallized aromatic polycarbonate having a weight-average molecular weight of 6,000 to 200,000 and having 0.03 wt % or less of terminal hydroxy group based on the polymer amount is disclosed, which comprises heating a mixture of a dihydroxydiaryl compound containing 85 mol % or more dihydroxydiarylalkane and diaryl carbonate to produce a prepolymer having a weight-average molecular weight of 2,000 to 20,000 and having terminal aryl carbonate group/total terminal groups ratio of 50 mol % or more, then subjecting the prepolymer to solid phase polymerization. This crystallized aromatic polycarbonate contains no impurities, is colorless, and has excellent properties as to heat resistance, hot water resistance, etc., thus being useful as engineering plastics. |
