abstract | This invention is a continunous or batchwise process and apnparatus for the manufacture of nmicrocapsules having a core nwhich contains a liquid, gaseous, nsolid or multiple-phase material nwhich is coated with an impermenable film. The microcapsules are nformed by applying a high presnsure, for a short period of time, to na mixture of the core and shell nmaterial, and by gradually reduncing the pressure, such as by passning the capsules through a baffled nchamber. The invention also inncludes a method for adjusting the nsize of the microcapsules and the nthickness of their shells. The micnrocapsules can be made with nseveral shell layers, to increase ntheir strength, or as multiple capnsules, having two or more cores. nThe apparatus comprises premixning block (33), compression nchamber (34), pressure reduction nblock (36), optional recycle line n(37), and optional capsule hardnening block (38). The invention is especially useful in producing time-release capsules and produces micro-capsules in a nsmall fraction of the time required by prior art methods. |
