abstract A water-soluble dye, free from cellulose reactive groups, of the formula:n wherein neach of Ar¹ and Ar², independently, represents an optionally substituted phenyl or naphthyl radical, neach of R¹ and R⁴, independently, represents -OR⁵ or -NR⁶R⁷, nR⁵ represents hydrogen or alkyl, nR⁶ represents hydrogen, alkyl, aryl or a radical of the formula -(C a H 2a O) m (C b H 2b O) n H, nR⁷ represents hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, a radical of the formula -(C a H 2a O) m (C b H 2b O) n H or a radical of a mono- or disazo dye, or nR⁶ and R⁷ together form a morpholine ring, na and b are different integers from 1 to 8, nm is an integer from 1 to 10, n n is an integer from 0 to 9, neach of R² and R³, independently, represents hydrogen or alkyl, nM represents hydrogen, ammonium or a monovalent metal, and neach of p and q, independently is an integer from 1 to 3. n The dyes are suitable for use in ink jet printing.
