A low-melting copolyimide contains 30 to 90 mole% of imide repeating units of the formula:n (b) 10 to 70 mole% of imide repeating units of the formula:n the copolymer having a logarithmic viscosity number of 0.1 to 5 dl/g when measured in concentrated sulphuric acid at a temperature of 30 ± 0.01°C at a concentration of 0.5 g/dl. n The copolymers are prepared by the polycondensation of appropriate tetracarboxylic anhydries and diamines to form a precursor which is subsequently converted to the polymer.
