The initiation of the polymerization or copolymerization of free-radically polymerizable monomers has hitherto been carried out using various peroxides, the storage of which can be dangerous; initiation must also take place in the absence of atmospheric oxygen. The new process should be safe and can be carried out in the presence of oxygen.n n n The polymerization or copolymerization is carried out in aqueous, optionally solvent-containing systems using a radical initiator which is prepared in situ in the polymerization system by adding an enzyme which produces peroxide and one or more enzyme substrates in the presence of oxygen and decomposes the peroxide produced in the process with the formation of radicals.n n n Manufacture of coatings. |
