abstract The application relates to a process for the preparation of alpha-alkylacroleins from aldehydes and formaldehyde. The reaction takes place in the presence of a secondary amine and a carboxylic acid with up to 5 carbon atoms, the reaction being carried out in two stages in such a way that part of the carboxylic acid is added to the reaction mixture in the first stage and the rest in the second stage.
