abstract The present invention relates to a novel method which, based on the homologous recombination of natural or artificially modified genes, gene fragments or other useful DNA sequences with homologous DNA segments within the plant genome, the targeted incorporation of genetic material at precisely defined locations in the Genome of the plant and a targeted, predictable modification of genes within the plant genome allowed. Furthermore, the method according to the invention enables a targeted identification of the function of individual genes within the overall genome of the plants. Another object of this invention relates to transgenic plants and their progeny obtainable by this process and the plant products thereof.
