abstract | An improved method of inducing a change in the dynamic ntorque transmission of an electrorheological fluid in nresponse to an electric field at low current comprising the nsteps of: (a) selecting a nonconductive liquid phase (e.g. nhigh dielectric hydrocarbon oil); (b) dispersing in the nnonconductive liquid phase a particulate phase substantially nfree of adsorbed water (e.g. zeolite): and (c) subjecting nthe resulting electrorheological fluid to an electric npotential in excess of about one kilovolt at a current ndensity of less than about one-third microamp per square ninch. Such a method achieves a rate of increase of dynamic ntransmission of torque per unit voltage, dM/dV, in excess of nabout 0.034 ft-lbs x 10⁻³/kV and a ratio of dynamic ntransmission of torque at an electric field strength of at nleast 2.4 kV to the dynamic transmission of torque at zero nfield strength, M/Mo, of at leeast about 2. |
