titleOfInvention Aqueous dispersions of polyacrylates or polyacrylates emulsions, coating compositions containing them, process for their preparation and their use
abstract Conventional concentrated solvent-free aqueous polyacrylate dispersions or polyacrylate emulsions generally have a highly acidic pH of from 2 to 3.5, which means that they have highly corrosive properties on the metal objects to be protected. By contrast, the novel polyacrylate dispersions and the coating compositions containing them have only a slightly acidic pH of from 4 to 6. The polyacrylate dispersions having the above slightly acidic pH are obtained by neutralising from 5 to 50 mol % of the carboxyl-carrying comonomers by means of a base before the copolymerisation with hydrophobic comonomers. The resultant polyacrylate dispersions dry on objects to give clear water-resistant films which can easily be removed using alkaline agents. Their pH of from 4 to 6 means that they are significantly less corrosive towards the objects to be protected. The aqueous polyacrylate dispersions or polyacrylate emulsions are used as coating compositions for temporary surface-protection of metallic and/or painted surfaces, in particular automobile bodies, against climatic and/or mechanical influences.
