titleOfInvention Sulfomethylation of high molecular weight polyarylamide polymers
abstract A process for preparing water-in oil sulfomethylated npolyacylamide polymers having high reduced specific nviscosities is being described. Said process comprises nreacting a polyacrylamide water-in-oil polysoap latex with nformaldehyde or an adduct of formaldehyde and bisulfite and a nmolar excess of an alkali metal sulfite as compared with the nmoles of formaldehyde used, in a reaction mixture which has a nwater-to-polymer (w/p) ratio of at least about 2.4, at nelevated temperatures and pressures to produce a water-in-oil nlatex terpolymer containing acrylamide, acrylate and nsulfomethylacrylatamide groups wherein said resulting latex nhas an RSV greater than the RSV of the starting npolyacrylamide polymer latex.
