titleOfInvention Monolithic solid electrolyte oxygen pump
abstract Multilayer oxygen pump (11) having a monolithic one-piece ceramic structure, allowing high oxygen production by weight and unit volume, thus being particularly suitable for use as a portable oxygen supply. The oxygen pump consists of a plurality of small cells with a diameter of about 1 to 2 millimeters, forming the walls of the pump consisting of thin layers of ceramic, from 25 to 50 microns, of constituents of cells. The cell components include an air electrode (15), an oxygen electrode (13), an electrolyte (17) and interconnection materials (19). The walls of the cells form the passages made for the inlet air, and for discharging the oxygen which is transformed from a relatively dilute gas mixture into a higher concentration by application of a DC voltage (44) to through the electrodes, so as to ionize the oxygen at the air electrode, after which the ionized oxygen passes through the electrolyte and is transformed into oxygen at the oxygen electrode.
