This invention relates to a process for synthesis of glycerol nfrom formaldehyde, wherein formaldehyde under substantially anhydrous ncondition is self-condensed in a catalytic step to dihydroxyacetone nwhich is separated from the self-condensation catalyst and nhydrogenated catalytically to glycerol. n The feature of the invention is to have less than 0.4% w/w of nwater in the self-condensation reaction mixture thereby improving nthe process to produce glycerol in commercially viable rates and nyields. |
